Planning a wedding comes with many decisions, and you may be wondering whether engagement photos are something you really need. While they are not required, booking an engagement session before your wedding offers so many benefits beyond receiving beautiful photographs. It gives you an opportunity to connect with your photographer, become more comfortable in front of the camera, and document this exciting season of your relationship.

Most couples are not used to having their photos professionally taken, and that is completely normal! You do not need to know how to pose or what to do with your hands. During your engagement session, I will guide you through movement-based prompts and natural poses so your photos feel relaxed and true to you.
At first, being in front of the camera may feel a little unfamiliar. However, as the session continues, you will begin to relax, have fun, and focus less on the camera. As a result, you will feel much more confident when your wedding day arrives.
Your photographer will spend a large portion of your wedding day by your side. Therefore, it is important that you feel comfortable with them and understand how they work.
Having an engagement session before your wedding gives us the chance to get to know each other without the busy schedule of a wedding day. You will learn how I give direction, and I will discover which prompts and poses feel the most natural for you as a couple. Consequently, we can move through your wedding portraits more comfortably and efficiently.

Your engagement session can act as a relaxed practice run for your wedding photos. By the time your wedding arrives, you will already recognize many of the prompts I use. Instead of worrying about how you look or what you should be doing, you can focus on each other and enjoy the moment.
This familiarity is especially helpful if one or both of you feel nervous about being photographed. Once you have experienced a session together, you will know what to expect—and you may even find yourself looking forward to your wedding portraits!
Your engagement is a meaningful chapter of your story, but it can pass by incredibly quickly. Between choosing vendors, finalizing details, and counting down the months, it is easy to forget to slow down and enjoy this time together.
An engagement session before your wedding gives you a reason to step away from planning for an evening and simply connect. Whether we visit a meaningful location, explore somewhere new, or spend a beautiful evening together during golden hour, your photographs will preserve what this season felt like.
Additionally, engagement photos allow you to showcase your everyday personalities. You can choose outfits and a location that feel like you, whether that means something casual and cozy, romantic and dressed up, or a combination of both.

Engagement photos are also incredibly useful throughout the wedding-planning process. For example, you can include them in:
Not only will you have photographs to enjoy immediately, but you can also incorporate them into your wedding in a personal and meaningful way.
Finally, your engagement session does not have to feel like another task on your wedding checklist. Instead, think of it as a date night. You can dress up, explore a beautiful location, laugh together, and celebrate everything that brought you to this point.
Your engagement session should feel relaxed, fun, and personal. There is no pressure to perform or pose perfectly. The goal is to capture the genuine connection between you while helping you feel prepared for your wedding photography experience.

Although engagement photos are optional, the experience can make a meaningful difference in how comfortable and confident you feel on your wedding day. You will have the opportunity to build trust with your photographer, become familiar with the process, and create photographs that celebrate your relationship before you say “I do.”
